Vineyard Residence, St. Helena

After a long search, our clients discovered this secluded vineyard on the banks of the Napa River at the St. Helena/Calistoga border, halfway between Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail.  They wanted to build a house that would feel contemporary and rooted in the land. We responded by locating it directly in the vineyard, surrounded on three sides by 20 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon.  We created a traditional silhouette, and rendered it in clean, modern lines.  A sliding barn door with open cedar boards provides the main entry and focal point.  The warm gray of the standing-seam metal roof complements the smooth, white finish of the stucco walls.  Cedar trusses over the main living areas lend warmth to the minimal interiors.  From there, bi-fold doors open onto an Ipe deck with views of Mount Saint Helena.
