A detail from the black and white pencil drawing “Evil Twin”, of Berlage’s Exchange in Amsterdam, by Daniel Castor
The entry serves the Graanbeurs, or the Grain Exchange, as well as the cafe along the left flank of the trading hall. The drawing ignores this entry’s twin, on the northern face of the same corner. This “jellyfish” drawing illuminates the path into the building past the wooden revolving door inside, and traces the spiraling transformation of the service stair as it winds its way up and around the shaft of a dumbwaiter into a more conventional switch-back. This entry was the subject of a number of preliminary drawing studies, as documented in the book Drawing Berlage’s Exchange.
